The tool samples the colours around the edges of the image, assumes those colours are background, and makes similar pixels transparent. The result is exported as a PNG with a transparent background. Because it relies on colour rather than a cloud AI model, it is fast, private and predictable, and it works best when the background is clearly different from the subject.
The Background tolerance control, from 18 to 110, sets how different a colour can be from the sampled background and still be removed. Raise it when traces of the background remain; lower it when parts of the subject start disappearing.

A ceramics maker photographs mugs on a sheet of white card by a window. With the default tolerance, the card disappears and the mug remains, except for a faint grey shadow under the base. Raising tolerance slightly removes the shadow without eating into the white glaze. The PNG then drops neatly onto a coloured shop banner.
A white mug on white card would be the hard case: the subject and background share colours, so increasing tolerance would also remove the glaze. Reshooting on a mid-grey or coloured card solves it in seconds.
Fine hair, fur, glass, smoke and soft shadows are hard for any colour-based method, because their pixels mix the subject and background. Expect to refine those edges by hand in an image editor if they matter. Transparent PNGs work in slides, documents, design tools and most website builders. Check the cut-out on both a light and a dark background before using it widely, since faint edge pixels that are invisible on white can show as a light outline on dark colours. If that happens, adjust the tolerance slightly or place the image on backgrounds close to the original colour.
If the destination does not support transparency, for example a marketplace that requires a pure white background, convert the PNG with PNG to JPG and choose white as the background colour. You get a consistent, clean white backdrop instead of the uneven original.
