Image decisions

Choose the right image workflow

A useful image result starts with the destination, not the converter. Choose a format and dimensions that preserve what matters without carrying unnecessary pixels or private metadata.

Format comes first

Use JPG for broadly compatible photographs, PNG for transparency and sharp graphics, and WebP when a modern website needs smaller delivery files. Conversion changes the container and compression; it cannot recreate detail that was already lost.

Keep an original editing-quality source. Generate delivery copies from that source instead of repeatedly converting an already compressed image.

Resize before aggressive compression

A camera photo can contain many more pixels than an email, profile image or website column can display. Reducing dimensions usually saves more space with fewer visible artifacts than forcing quality very low.

Keep the aspect ratio linked to prevent stretching. Crop first when the destination requires a different shape, such as a square profile image or portrait story.

Review privacy and output

Photos can contain GPS, capture time and camera metadata. Inspect and remove unnecessary fields before public sharing, then verify the cleaned copy.

Check the real output dimensions, file size, transparency and visible quality. Keep the source until the new file has opened correctly in the destination software.
