What a Wi-Fi QR code contains

A Wi-Fi QR code stores the network name, security type and password in a standard text format. A compatible phone can scan it and offer to join the network without retyping the password.

Create and test the code

Enter the network name exactly, select the correct security type, add the password and generate the code. Test the downloaded result with at least two devices before printing it.

• Use dark foreground and light background colors
• Keep the clear margin around the code
• Do not cover a large part of the code with a logo
• Print at a size people can scan from a comfortable distance

Share guest access, not your private network

Create a separate guest network when visitors only need internet access. A printed QR code exposes the stored credentials to anyone who can scan or photograph it, so replace the password if the sign is lost or publicly shared.

Create a guest network in your router first, then generate its QR code using the exact network name and current password. A QR code does not create the network or isolate guests from your other devices. Those controls belong in the router settings.

Test the downloaded image on a phone that is not already connected. Confirm the proposed network name, join it and open a website. Then test the printed sign at its intended distance and lighting. A successful scan on your monitor does not prove a small or glossy print will scan.

Diagnose scanning and connection separately

If the camera cannot detect the code, enlarge it, preserve the blank margin and increase contrast. If it detects the code but connection fails, check the password, security setting and router availability. Do not try to fix an incorrect password by changing the QR image resolution.

Anyone who can read the code can obtain the stored credentials. Replace the sign after changing the guest password and remove old copies. Avoid using the password for any account or private network.
