How to split a PDF or extract only the pages you need

Choose page ranges safely, reduce accidental disclosure and verify every extracted PDF before sharing it.

Choose split or extract

Splitting every page is useful when one scan contains many independent documents. Extracting a range is better when you need a chapter, selected invoice or a few supporting pages.

Write down the intended page numbers before processing a long document. Viewer page labels can differ from the physical PDF page index when a cover uses Roman numerals or unnumbered pages.

Minimize what you share

Extracting only necessary pages reduces file size and lowers the chance of exposing unrelated information. It is especially important for financial, medical and employment documents.

Review both sides of scanned forms. A blank-looking back page can contain faint signatures, identifiers or scanner marks that are easy to miss.

Preserve the source

Save the result as a new file and keep the complete original in its proper location. Page extraction should not become an accidental deletion workflow.

Encrypted PDFs need to be unlocked first. Damaged documents or unusually complex forms may require desktop software to preserve all interactive behavior.

Verify page count and content

Open the output and compare its first and last page with the requested range. Search for a distinctive phrase when the document contains selectable text.

Check orientation, annotations and form values. A correct page count does not guarantee that every visual or interactive element survived as expected.

Continue with the smaller file

A focused extract can be compressed, signed or protected separately without changing the complete original. Apply redaction before sharing if a selected page still contains information the recipient should not see.

Use clear filenames so the extract cannot be confused with the complete record.
